Proud to be a nurse for 40 years

I will celebrate 40 years in the nursing profession next January. I have seen the best and the worst of human nature. I have wiped away tears and shed many. I have seen huge changes in the profession, some good, some not so good, but through these years, I have made good friends and seen nurses always give their all to their patients and support their colleagues.

Recently I was on the other side of nursing, being a patient. I was cared for with professionalism, skill and care and kindness. I felt extremely anxious, as a little bit of knowledge can be a bad thing. To my colleagues who cared for me, I say thank you. To all the student nurses I have mentored, you amaze me with your incredible work load to study and look after families and do placements.

I am proud to be a nurse and I hope I have many more years doing what I love to do.

I to have been nursing 50+ years. Many in Glasgow before coming to NZ in 1973 and nearly all of 40+ years here. Last 10years working at QuayMed A and M clinic in Auckland city. Being 70 is not a problem nowadays and experience counts. Good Wishes to all nurses

I have been nursing full time (,R.N.) for 57 years mostly in Management positions . Still very active and want to continue ,however, find that younger Managers now only look at age, not valuable skills and experience .Disappointing!

I remember that day at Middlemore in January 1976 like it was yesterday. Our training was just the best. Must catch up soon

Middlemore 1975, still nursing, still loving the hands on role of district nursing. Our training set us up well, but I agree, it is a bit different experiencing it from the other side, not for myself but a close family member. Recently read "Being Mortal" and believe it should be a compulsory text for all those in health care.

Great story Maree. I trained 1966 - 1969 at Auckland Hosp. I would go back and do it all again. Still nursing now.

Thanks for sharing Maree. Like you 46 years nursing and still loving it. If anything I believe standards for nurses are getting too tough...but it's a changing world!

I ticked over 45 years full time in the the NZ Health service in September this year. Celebrated by shouting my work colleagues a catered lunch. I consider my role working with Patients an absolute privilege. To be allowed into their lives at vulnerable times, to make a difference is priceless. Not replicated in any other profession.

Recently retired after 53 years. Trained 1962 - 65. Have loved my working life as a nurse and would do it again. Have seen so many changes over the years. Has been an honour to be a nurse.

Google Flights has changed and it's now easier to buy tickets ...

The next time you open Google Flights, notice the information on the right. It reads: "The new Google Flights has arrived." No lie, it's already available - and comes loaded with new features like the ability to compare prices per month, see how they will change over ..
